At the hospital, diplomat Anthony Crowley tells Wes that the kids involved in the attack are from prominent families and trying to hold them responsible will cause a firestorm. One night while returning to his quarters, he comes across a gang of kids attempting to set fire to an underage rentboy and intervenes, taking the injured René under his wing. When opportunity knocks, he signs on to work at a hospital in a tent camp in Haiti. Pediatrician Wes Gordon will do just about anything to escape his grief. This story touched my heart because the living conditions described in the story are very real. I'm bowled over by how readers seem to love Wes and Anthony. I want to take a minute to thank the wonderful reviewers and readers for their amazing comments and kind words. A Heart Without Borders released last night at midnight and I cannot believe the wonderful reviews and reader feedback I've been getting. 7/8/2023 0 Comments Cutlass by Rayne HallCurrently, she edits the Ten Tales series of multi-author short story anthologies: Bites: Ten Tales of Vampires, Haunted: Ten Tales of Ghosts, Scared: Ten Tales of Horror, Cutlass: Ten Tales of Pirates, Beltane: Ten Tales of Witchcraft, Spells: Ten Tales of Magic, Undead: Ten Tales of Zombies, Seers: Ten Tales of Clairvoyance and more. Where the Wright Brothers first flew at Kitty Hawk is a national memorial. Now, Edison’s lab is a national monument. And you know what? It’s filled with dusty boxes. I took a tour of the building at SLAC where those revolutionary discoveries were made four decades ago. Back in the 1960s it was the center of world particle physics research, the place where the building blocks of the universe were discovered. The accelerator at Stanford is a two-mile long rifle barrel that shoots electrons at its targets at over 99% of the speed of light. I’m intrigued (and let’s face it an ignoramus) when it comes to physics – what research did you have to do (or how sexy is the Stanford Linear Accelerator really?) And then while the couple is on an early-morning run, a car comes out of the darkness and smashes Ian’s leg and leaves Rowena in a coma. Ian’s mom is insisting that he get credit for her dead aunt who made a major discovery in particle physics. Rowena, a deputy district attorney, is trying her first homicide. Ian’s facing a “smash and grab” for his company engineered by a Silicon Val ley billionaire. So Keith, what can readers of your first book, Dot Dead, expect from Smasher? What’s in store this time for Ian and Rowena? Reasen praised Darshanand for creating the school’s robotics team and for “his smart sense of humor and the father figure he was to many, both staff and students.” In the school’s Enchanted Garden, she said, “There is a bench and plaque dedicated to him.” He had fulfilled his dream, teaching math and engineering, and his success was especially evident when numerous colleagues and hundreds of students going back more than a dozen years attended his funeral service and then a memorial in the summer of 2022, said teacher Yvonne Reasen, his former colleague and chapter leader. That was his dream.”ĭarshanand died of COVID-19 on Aug. The transition, according to Darshanand’s wife, Jean, “wasn’t hard, because his father was a teacher. “He traded money for family.”Īnd, Bennett added, “He also wanted to serve children in New York City,” where Darshanand settled when he emigrated from Guyana. “He wanted to be closer to family, and with American Airlines you were constantly traveling as an airline mechanic,” explained Gabe Bennett, who became a close friend of Darshanand during their 23 years teaching at the school on the John F. He did so for personal reasons and never regretted it. Ramdas took a pay cut in 1997 when he left his job as an airline mechanic to become a teacher at the Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Roxane gay feminismIn her new essay collection Bad Feminist, Roxane Gay grapples with many of the same issues that challenge other women who grew up after second wave feminism-sex, love, and professional ambition-and she readily admits her weaknesses in each of these areas. Women may be writing their own fantasies now, but these are still fantasies of conventionality. The man is smart and self-contained, too profound to worry himself over social concerns the woman is flighty, insecure, and needy. The man initiates and enjoys sex the woman is sexually available and passive. The interesting-and troubling-thing about this supposed inversion is that the gender dynamic of the resulting happy couple is pretty much the same, no matter who’s writing the fantasy: the woman is melodramatic and led astray by her emotions the man is the moral compass who sets her straight. In a superficial sense, the fantasy is indeed a female take on an old comedic trope: the unappealing anti-hero winds up in the arms of a gorgeous, kind woman. These women are selfish, obnoxious, and slutty: and they still get the guy! Critics from Bitch magazine to the Guardian have applauded characters like Hannah, Lena Dunham’s character on Girls, and Annie of the film Bridesmaids for upending the traditional injunction that women must be likeable. The internet is excited about the rise of the bad girl. With the narrative weaving in and out of the events that take place in A Christmas Carol, The Last of the Spirits tells the tale of these two strange children, and how they came to be enclosed in the folds of the spirit’s robes. As a little present in this season of goodwill, we enclose a wonderful book, The Last of the Spirits, by one of our favourite authors, Chris Priestley. The spirit identifies them as ‘Ignorance’ and ‘Want’. When we meet the towering, benevolent Ghost of Christmas Present, hidden in his robes we glimpse two disconcertingly withered children. I’m sure you know and love Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol as much as we do. This is what we wrote:Ī reminder from a Christmas past that our actions foreshadow certain ends The letter set out the impact of library closures, the loss of employed, qualified librarians and the loss of funding for the purchase of new books, on the children and adults who use them today, on the future of literacy in this country and also on the British book industry as a whole. In December 2017 we wrote a letter and, enclosing a book, sent it to Theresa May, British Prime Minister. |
